Rice - Crop Use Guide
Value Statement
It's hard to imagine a world without rice, the rice crop provides food for nearly 2/3 of the world's population. Rice has also fed more people over a longer time than any other crop. It is spectacularly diverse, both in the way it is grown and how it is used by humans.
Today, nearly 85% of the rice consumed in America is grown in the U.S World-Class technological efficiencies have enabled the U.S. to become one of the largest rice exporters in the world. Rice is unique because it can grow in wet environments that other crops cannot survive in.
Satellite imagery from Granular Insights provides growers an opportunity to manage rice fields remotely using the Vegetative Index as a guide to monitor day to day and weekly changes. These changes in the rice crop can be a result of excessive weed growth, crop damage from pests and disease. Monitor all your fields remotely from a mobile device to ensure your crop reaches its highest yield potential.
Germination
Granular Insights Frequency:
- Leverage weekly Directed Scouting emails to highlight top fields of interest.
- Log into Granular Insights at least 1 time a week.
- Use the fields rankings filers to see changes and apply this information with the knowledge you have of your fields.
What to Look For & Actions to Take:
- Early Weed Detection: Look for areas of relatively high vegetation that may indicate early weeds flourishing in your field.
- Poor Germination/Replant Decisions: Areas of low vegetation may indicate poor germination. The imagery can help you identify these areas and make timely replant decisions.
- Early Pest/Disease Issues: Check for localized but irregular areas of low vegetation due to crop damage resulting in the field showing a higher variability in the field variability filter.
- Fungicide Decisions: Watch for areas of low health in the Vegetation Index to make application decisions due to disease pressures.
Vegetative
Granular Insights Frequency:
- Leverage weekly Directed Scouting emails to highlight top fields of interest.
- Log into Granular Insights at least 2-3 times a week.
- Use the field ranking filters to see changes and apply this information with the knowledge you have of your fields.
What to Look For & Actions to Take:
- Nutrient Deficiencies: Follow the topography to track areas of low progress in the Vegetation Index.
- Weather Events: Monitor recent weather events and their impact on the Vegetation Index, an unexpected rainfall may bring more water into the field causing the Vegetation Index to show higher vegetation areas within the field.
- Nitrogen Decisions: Make targeted point in time decisions for rescue applications.
- Pest/Disease Issues: Check for localized but irregular areas of low vegetation due to crop damage resulting in the field showing a higher variability in the field variability filter.
- Water Levels: Identify barriers such as levees and monitor changes to water levels within the field using the vegetation index; areas of low to no water including barriers will show low levels in the Vegetation Index.
Reproductive

What to Look For & Actions to Take:
- Weather Events: Monitor weather events and their impact on the Vegetation Index, unexpected weather events may cause areas of the field to show low vegetation resulting from crop damage.

Ripening
Granular Insights Frequency:
- Leverage weekly Directed Scouting emails to highlight top fields of interest.
- Log into Granular Insights at least 1-2 times post-harvest to assess yield vs. imagery to adjust plans for the next season.
- Review your fields using your knowledge of the Vegetation Index to see how each field performed in order to identify management practice changes for the next year.
What to Look For & Actions to Take:
- Management Practices: Adjust tilling decisions based on trends for areas showing low vegetation resulting in low crop performance.
