What data do I need for Carbon?
In any carbon program, accurate records are needed in order to participate and receive money for your sequestration. With Granular Insights we make that record keeping process simple and effective. Below is a list of data needed for Corteva’s Carbon Initiative:
- Planting Date
The planting date and crop inform the extent of soil carbon levels due to root growth, microbial activity, and plant development.
Nitrogen Applications Data
- Application(s) date
- Application method(s)
- Nitrogen product(s) applied
- Nitrogen product application rate(s)
Nitrogen emission management is part of carbon farming and plays a smaller role in overall carbon credit generation.
- Harvest Date
- Harvest product (e.g. grain or silage)
- Total yield per field
- Three years of historical data*
Harvest and yield data quantify biomass removal as part of a soil carbon model.
*For your first year you will need to provide three years of historic harvest data that includes the crop, harvest product, and yield for each field you have enrolled.
Tillage Data (If Applicable)
- Tillage date(s)
- Type of tillage
Tillage data corroborates the reduction or elimination of activity that releases carbon by physical soil management.
Cover Crop Data (If Applicable)
- Termination date
Cover crop data is used to calculate the amount of carbon sequestration by living plants.
Irrigation Data (If Applicable)
- Area covered
- Total water applied per field
Irrigation data is used to understand the mixed effects of supplemental water on soil carbon.
