Smart Defaults for Variable Rate Seeding (VRS)
Smart Defaults is a smarter, faster and more personalized way to manage your VRS recommendations by reducing repetitive tasks and simplifying workflows.
Process – Web
- Log in to Granular Insights for Canada at https://ca.app.granular.ag.
- Click the VRS tab on the left navigation menu.
- Enter desired Smart Defaults.
- Automation – manage how a recommendation is generated
- Varieties – set seeding data for all corn and soybean products in the operation (e.g. Seeding Rate (max/min), Yield (max/min), Rate Increments, Stand Loss, Grain Price and Cost)
- Recommendation Inputs – set types of data used to generate Decision Zones and Yield Goals (e.g. Decision Zone Productivity Layer, Yield Goal, Minimum Polygon Size)

Exports – view the status of external connections and view/manage machine type for an operation
- Under Smart Defaults, select Varieties.
Note:- While in any Smart Default selection, click Operation Overview at the top of the Smart Defaults window to return to the Smart Defaults menu.

- Click Add Variety to add an operational variety to be used for the VRS recommendations and enter the seeding data for the product (corn and/or soybeans). Click Add.
Notes:- To customize the seeding curves for irrigation, toggle on and enter the Irrigated preferences to be applied. Click Add.
- If you want to apply the variety preferences to all the operations in the agency, check the box to do so. Click Add.

Only Sales Representatives will have the option to select Apply these preferences to all the operations in the agency.

- Select Recommendation Inputs. Click Save once preferences are selected.

Generate Decision Zone
- Rank base productivity options from most preferred to least preferred by grabbing
and dragging the option card to the preferred position.
- Zones will be generated from the first available options.
- For Yield Predict, select 3 or 5 Zones.
- Add/remove any productivity options that you want/do not want to be used by clicking on the
icon.
- Enter the minimum polygon size to be used.
- Select Include irrigation when available if you want the most recently created irrigation layer to be used to generate VRS recommendations.
- Rank base productivity options from most preferred to least preferred by grabbing

Set Yield Goal
- Rank Yield Goal options for current crop rotation, from most preferred to least preferred by grabbing
and dragging the Yield Goal option card to the preferred position.
- Select the yield value (max/min/average) for Actual Data and Planned Data.
- Historical data from the past 6 years will be used. Minimum of 3 years of data required for Planned and Actual yield goal settings. If this requirement not met, the next priority will be used.
- Rank Yield Goal options for current crop rotation, from most preferred to least preferred by grabbing

Only generate flat rate recommendations
- Select if you do not want to generate variable rate seeding recommendations.
- Select if you do not want to generate variable rate seeding recommendations.

Generate Decision Zone
- Select Exports. Click Save when preferences entered.
- Set the Machine Type that the recommendations are to be generated for by selecting the type in the dropdown menu.
- To automatically generate reports when exporting recommendations, check the box beside Generate report on export.
- Once you have entered your Smart Default preferences and are ready to generate recommendations based on your preference selections, select Automation.
- Enable the Automate VRS Recommendations toggle.
- You can run automation whenever you want by clicking Run Automation to run the VRS recommendation for the operation.
