Create a Decision Zone
When working with VRS, each field is divided into polygons known as Decision Zones or management zones. Decision zones allow for better input placement, lowering cost and improving productivity on every acre. They are a requirement for generating variable rate seeding (VRS) recommendations in Granular Insights. Decision zones can be created using multi-year yield analysis (MYYA) layers and irrigation layers (optional).
Decision zones will generate automatically in Granular Insights when a new MYYA layer is created by uploading new corn or soybean yield data that comes in with adequate coverage (80% or greater of the field). The decision zones will be based on the layers of data available for the field at the time the crop was assigned. This could include multi-year yield analysis (MYYA) and irrigation.
Process – Web
- Log in to Granular Insights for Canada at https://ca.app.granular.ag.
- Click VRS on the left navigation menu.
- Click the link under the column Decision Zones for the field you want to create a decision zone for.
- Click Create New Decision Zones.
- Enter a name for the Decision Zone.
- Select the layers you want to use to create the decision zone and adjust the Minimum Polygon Size to the desired minimum.
Notes:- From the decision zone creation window, you can create a MYYA layer as well as delete existing ones. To build MYYA, choose yield layers for at least three years (if possible) for best results. Analysis Parameters can be adjusted by changing the values for the different classification groups. Click Process MYYAs to complete the layer creation.
- Allow time for this layer to process. The newly created MYYA will appear under the Multi-Year Yield Analysis section of the zone editor and is selectable once processing is complete.
- Setting a minimum polygon size allows you to ensure that when the zone set is created, no individual polygons are smaller than the set value.
- You can also create a decision zone using Smart Defaults if they have been set and turned on. Select the field to create a zone for and click Generate Decision Zones from the bulk menu at the bottom of the screen. Learn more about Smart Defaults.
- From the decision zone creation window, you can create a MYYA layer as well as delete existing ones. To build MYYA, choose yield layers for at least three years (if possible) for best results. Analysis Parameters can be adjusted by changing the values for the different classification groups. Click Process MYYAs to complete the layer creation.
- Once you have selected/created the layers to be used to create the decision zone, click Generate Zone. It will now be available to select for the field.
To edit an existing decision zone, under the Decision Zone column, click the arrow to the right of the zone name that you want to edit. Click the Field Layers icon. Learn more on editing VRS decision zones using field layers.
